"Build a Bridge"

A Song for Safe Passage

One of my favorite solutions to the ongoing biodiversity crisis is the wildlife bridge.

Because we’ve built all our infrastructure atop other animals’ habitats, our roads have become a river of death for our non-human neighbors. If we want to ensure future generations experience the same panoply of life, we must do everything we can to help our animal friends get to the other side.

These crossings can be of any size or scale, a culvert dug underground or a bridge soaring through the sky. In Los Angeles, they’re nearly finished with one that spans 10 lanes of traffic along the US-101, all to protect the Santa Monica mountain lions from extinction by automobile.

The ambition of that SoCal crossing inspired this song – “Build a Bridge” – which I wrote with the hope that we might heal the great divide.

Thanks for listening!
